Almaty is hosting a session of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Consultative Committee for Oil and Gas, chaired by Danial Akhmetov (a member of the energy and infrastructure board of the Commission). One of the topics being discussed there is the formation of a common electricity market and balance of energy resources, News Kazakhstan reports.

Russia to become independent from food imports

Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of the Federation Council of Russia, said at the Belarus and Russia Forum of Regions in Minsk that Russia may become a major world food supplier. She reminded that Russia imported about a third of all its food consumed, RIA Novosti reports.Matviyenko noted the need to control GMO products, develop eco products and protect consumers from low-quality products. She believes that Russia and Belarus have a basis for enforcing food security as Union States.

Kazakhstan wants to become financial center of Eurasian Union

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said at a session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council that Almaty should be the financial center of the Eurasian Economic Union, ITAR-TASS reports.He reminded that Almaty will headquarter the supranational structure for regulation of financial markets of the Eurasian Union. The Eurasian Economic Commission will have headquarters in Moscow and the Eurasian Court in Minsk.

Agreement on formation of Eurasian Economic Union almost ready – Azarov

Anton Azarov, the head of the section for international interaction at the Development and Integration Department of the Eurasian Economic Commission, said at an Astana-Moscow-Yerevan video conference that the agreement on formation of the Eurasian Economic Union was almost ready.The document, as he stated, will be signed on May 29, 2014. The sides will still need to reach common grounds on trade of oil, gas, petroleum, medicaments and other products.

Road map for Kyrgyzstan’s joining Customs Union almost completed

Kyrgyz Prime Minister Joomar Otorbayev said in Moscow that the road map for the country to join the Customs Union had almost been completed, ITAR-TASS reports.He expressed hope that the road map project would soon be approved by the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission. It would then be passed by the parliament.Following the procedures, the Kyrgyz government would then file a bid to join the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Space. In Otorbayev’s words, Kyrgyzstan expects Rosneft to make a decision on entering the country.

Treaty on Eurasian Economic Union to be signed on May 29

Russian President Vladimir Putin said after a session of the Supreme Eurasian Council that the treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union will be signed on May 29, ITAR-TASS reports.He noted that U.S. sanctions will not affect the integration process of Eurasia. The president expressed confidence that the treaty would intensify cooperation of the countries signing it. Putin added that the treaty will make the market of 170 million people more attractive and substantial.
